Since 1979, artists from all over the world have come to liven up the Folkest stage every summer. This year is no exception, thanks to a great concert line-up that will take place from June 22th to July 10th, with some extra events up to July 26th. The idea behind this multicolored festival is to promote music that could enhance people’s cultural roots, no matter if it’s folk, jazz or singer- songwriter music and a beautiful chance to cross borders between genres. Moreover, you will discover ancient legends, stories, hero sagas and short stories that are part of the ethnical cultural pride of people.
If last year the focus was on typical sounds and music of Sardinia, with the winner of Folkest Music Award, the fantastic old man, Luigi Lai, maestro of Sardinia’s millenniaold musical instrument launeddas, this year the aim of the edition is to highlight the beautiful city of Naples and its unique, quite complex, cultural and multi-ethnic sounds.
Several Parthenope artists will play at the festival, such as Enzo Avitabile, very important Parthenope artist, winner of two David di Donatello Awards. His performance takes place on June 28th in Monetereale Valcellina. Another major artist is Teresa De Sio that will pay homage to Pino Daniele, a famous Italian singer-songwriter, on July 21h in Capodistria. Solis String Quartet, Jenny Sorrenti and Saint hust are going to perform in Spilimbergo on July 9th together with the younger band Vianova and Suon&Passion too.
Do not miss these great concerts in Spilinbergo: the Albion sounding music of the inventors of folk-rock British, Fairport Convention, on July 10th and the voice of Ray Wilson, last front man of Genesis, one of the most important and innovative group in the history of progressive rock, on July 11st. Folkstone, an Italian group, will lead us to the discovery of new border of folk-metal on July 22th.
The festival will end with the exhibition of Ron on July 22nd in Capodistria, Slovenia

and ……..

Do not miss the sounds and melodies of Celtics traditions, almost a recurring theme of the festival, as well as over sixty manouche, balkan, klezmer and blues gigs. The meaningful presence of artists from our region won’t be overlooked either. On June 11th, in the historic and spectacular location of the Ragogna Castle, a lot of Friulian musicians will exhibit in an important preview called “La Fieste de Sedon”.
Another major preview that will take place at Ospedaletto di Gemona is Ambra Pintore’s show (winner of Suonare@Folkest in the 2015) where she will showcase her new discographic project produced by Sar’d and the young Martina Iori’s, set, who sings in the “ladina” language spoken by an ethnic minority in South-Tyrol.
Finally, after the huge success of last year, on 4th of July at Udine Castle there will be the final night of Suonare@Folkest, in which the winner of the territorial qualifications will challenge each other for the ultimate victory. Guest of honor of the night will be Pupi di Surfaro, winners of Andrea Parodi Music Award in Cagliari in 2016.
In Spilimbergo, from 7 to 10 of July there will be the highlight of the event. Many spaces will be dedicated to children: they will have the possibility to try an instrument with the support of many different teachers of Gottardo Tomat Musical School and to attend a game-show with Molino Rosenkranz.
Same as last year,  new books will be presented, meeting and debates as a backdrop of the whole event. This is a section of the festival that grow up a lot in last two years, thanks to many Italian Publishing Houses and Institutions like Nuovo IMAIE.
This 39th edition of Folkest will have two important previews: on Saturday 29th April Eugenio Finardi, will perform at the Teatro comunale Candoni di Tolmezzo, event organized by Nuova Pro Loco Tolmezzo. Seven years after his last show there, the singer-songwriter comes back in the Region for a new concert that we presume will be unforgettable. This is one of the date of his tour Musica Ribelle, planned in order to celebrate the 40 years of his career that will bring him also in China.
Instead, on Saturday 6th May at “Teatro Nuovo Giovanni di Udine” (time 9.00 pm) the Italian artist Simone Cristicchi with Francesca Gallo will tell us about “Orcolat ’76 – L’orco che divora la terra” (“an ogre that devour the earth”), a collection of thoughts onwhat happened in Friuli from 6th of May to 15th of September.
This work is very accurate and well-researched. It is able to recall those days, through reality, dream and hope for the future, in a sort of “ideal bridge” with nowadays. The show debuted last September at the Gemona cathedral and now it is reintroduced to celebrate the 41st anniversary of the big earthquake in Friuli.
In that occasion the show was filmed under the direction of Claudia Brugnetta, produced by FolkestFilm and broadcast by RAI FVG. Later on, the show will become soon a DVD.
