The municipality faces the Carnic and Julian Prealps, bordered by the Torre River to the east, and consists of eight inhabited units.
The territory is mentioned in the 13th century with a settlement named Verniacum, corresponding to the current hamlet of Vergnacco. The church, dedicated to Saints Thomas and Mark, is attested as existing in a document from 1360.
