Romans d’Isonzo

ROMANS D'ISONZO

In friulian "Romans dal Lusinç".

The municipality is located in a flat area of eastern Friuli and is crossed by the Torre, Judrio, Versa
streams, and the Bisunta river.

The territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with the tradition of an ancient castelliere
presence in the area. Significant Roman evidence includes five identified rural settlements.

In 1986, one of Italy’s largest Lombard necropolises was discovered in the locality of San Zorç, with
some artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museums of Cividale, the site of the first
Lombard duchy, and Aquileia, the capital of the 10th Regio Venetia et Histria during Augustus’ time.

The most important religious center for several centuries was the hamlet of Versa, also remembered for
the fighting that took place there in the last days of July 1866, just before the signing of the Cormòns
armistice.
