San Quirino

SAN QUIRINO

In friulian "San Quirin".

San Quirino is located geographically at the northern outskirts of Pordenone, connected by the vast meadows of Comina and Roiata. More accurately described as former meadows, this land, once the site of one of Italy’s first aviation fields in the early 20th century, has been consumed by Pordenone’s expansion and massive industrialization. The area has developed a significant industrial and artisanal fabric, providing employment opportunities for hundreds of workers. Agriculture remains a traditional source of income in this zone. San Quirino, San Foca, and Sedrano form the modern municipality of San Quirino. During the 14th century, the Knights Templar, later the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and then of Malta, owners of San Quirino, established a house with a janitor, serving as a hospice for pilgrims, and a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The church was destroyed during the Turkish invasion in 1499, but was rebuilt by the locals in 1500 and expanded in the 19th century. The presence of the Templar Knights, later of Malta, has left no remaining traces in San Quirino, perhaps only the coat of arms displayed on the pediment of Villa Cattaneo in the town center, a beautiful 17th-18th century building.
